Dr Theo Smalberger – Clinical Oncologist
Dr Theo Smalberger was born and bred in Roodepoort. He completed his MBChB degree at the University of the Free State in 1998. After working abroad for a number of years, he returned to Bloemfontein to specialise at the well-recognised Oncology Department of the University of the Free State.
In 2008, he started in private practice in Kimberley and has since established the largest oncology practice in the Northern Cape.
He is a member of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the South African Society for Clinical and Radiation Oncologists (SASCRO).
Kimberley Clinic
Smalberger Oncology is situated on the ground floor of Lenmed Royal Hospital and Heart Centre. This is where Dr Smalberger consults with patients and where the administration of chemotherapy and supportive treatments take place.
Patients are scheduled to receive treatment from Mondays to Thursdays, between 07:30 and 16:00. Arrangements are made with each individual patient with regards to when they will receive treatment.
The chemotherapy room is furnished with comfortable lazy-boy chairs for patients only. Only one visitor is allowed per patient. No children under the age of 12 years old are allowed in the chemotherapy room.
There is also a procedure room available in the practice.
In the basement of Lenmed Royal Hospital and Heart Centre, is Icon’s Radiation Unit.
Upington Clinic
Dr Smalberger travels to Upington every five weeks to evaluate and treat his patients in this part of the province.
Patients, who wish to see Dr Smalberger in Upington, still need to make an appointment with his receptionist in Kimberley.
Chemotherapy is also administered at this facility by Oncology Registered Nurse Nancy Padmaker. Chemotherapy is arranged in advance with patients and is usually administered on Thursdays and/or Fridays.
The clinic is situated at 66 Mark Street in the Medpro Arcade in Upington.

Smalberger Oncology offers oncology consultations in Kimberley and Upington. The main treatment option available in Kimberley and Upington is administration of chemotherapy, while radiation therapy is available in Kimberley.
